Intermittent Fasting & Eating Disorders: When Life in the Fasting Lane Takes a Turn for the Worse
Intermittent fasting is the “diet du jour” and continues to gain popularity. But life in the fasting lane can take a turn for the worse, especially for someone who is vulnerable to disordered eating behaviors. In this presentation, we will take a deeper dive into the current body of research that supports intermittent fasting, comparing and contrasting it with what research has told us about general “weight loss,” and intuitive eating. A focus on the short- and long-term effects of circadian rhythm and meal timing on metabolism and mood will help discern the principles of intermittent fasting that can trigger disordered eating behaviors. In conclusion, questions to help guide your discussion with your clients around their vulnerability to the risks of intermittent fasting will be discussed.
