On April 28, 1995, Melanie Martinez was born in Astoria, Queens, to Dominican and Puerto Rican parents. She had always begun to dream about being a singer when she was a little girl, when listening to songs like Britney Spears, Shakira, Christina Aguilera, and so on. At the age of fourteen, she started playing guitar and beginning her career during her junior year of high school. She was competing in the MSG Varsity Talent Show at the time, but in the second round she was disqualified.
Although Melanie later entered the competition for season three of “The Voice” by performing a rendition of Britney’s “Toxic” this did not cause her lose faith. Before she finally agreed to remain on Team Adam, she got three chair turns from Blake Shelton, Adam Levine and Cee-Lo. Unfortunately, in week five, she was defeated by an audience poll.
While she was unable to win the award, with her original song, Melanie certainly succeeded in capturing the hearts of people. In February 2014, she launched her debut track, “Dollhouse”. It was so well-received by individuals that the RIAA rated it as platinum. Months later, the popularity of the album encouraged her to sign an arrangement with Atlantic Records. She then launched her debut EP “Dollhouse” in May of the same year, which included the gold-certified single “Carousel” “In a trailer for “American Horror Story: Freak Show,” the song was also included.
In the next year, with the success of another “Cry Baby” Gold-certified track, Melanie started releasing her first studio album, “Pity Party” On July 10, 2015, the album’s second track, “Soap” was released with its music video drawing more than thirty million viewers. On August 14, “Cry Baby” itself reached the shops to modest critical acclaim. It debuted on the Billboard 200 at No. 6.
Melanie soon began working on her next song, “Cry Baby”, after the success of “K-12” and completed it in 2016. Melanie introduced them to her second EP named “Cry Baby’s Extra Clutter” a physical cassette compilation of the bonus tracks from “Cry Baby” as fans waited for the album to be scrapped.
As Melanie was making a movie telling the tale of each song from the attempt, fans had to wait a little while before they could purchase “K-12” Later, the first promotional trailer for the album was officially released on May 15, 2019, with the album cover being released on Instagram a day later. On September 6, “K-12” was released, landing at No. 3 on the Billboard 200. A movie preceding the release of the album was available in select theaters worldwide and was included in the “K-12” digital edition of the album. She has put the video on YouTube as well.
