Early Years & Parents: Who were the Parents of Garth Hudson?

Canada’s Windsor, Ontario, is where Garth Hudson was born. Fred James Hudson is his father, and Olive Pentland is his mother. His parents were both performers. Together with him, his father Fred also participated in the First World War as a fighter pilot.

Hudson’s musical tastes were greatly affected by his parents’ careers. From a very young age, he picked up the piano. He also acquired accordion and organ playing skills. The musician has classical instruction in piano, harmony, counterpoint, and music theory.

He started writing songs when he was eleven years old. The renowned guitarist attended Medway High School and Broughdale Public School for his education. Following that, he attended the University of Western Ontario to study music. He did, however, leave school after one year.

What is the Professional Career of Garth Hudson?

Garth Hudson joined a group called The Silhouettes in 1956. The band changed their name to Paul London And The Capers after Paul “London” Hutchins joined in 1958. With the group, Hudson used to play both the piano and the saxophone. Levon Helm and Ronnie Hawkins approached Hudson in 1961 and invited him to join their band, The Hawks.

In December 1961, Garth Hudson became a band member. The band also included Ronnie Hawkins, Robbie Robertson, Levon Helms, Rick Danko, and Richard Manuel in addition to Hudson. The Hawk members first encountered Bob Dylan in 1965. The group recorded “Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?” with Dylan.

They also traveled with Dylan for his 1966 tour of the United States, Europe, and Australia. The Hawks’ debut album, Music from Big Pink, was then released in 1968. The Hawks had changed their name to Band by the time the album was released. Band performed as a collectively for the last time at their final show, which was held on Thanksgiving Day 1976 in San Francisco, after a number of successful albums.

Islands, the band’s last album, was then released. Garth Hudson continued to perform as a session musician after the band split up. Together with albums by other musicians including Emmylou Harris, Van Morrison, and Leonard Cohen, he contributed his music to numerous films. The band regrouped in 1983. Robbie Robertson, a founding member, chose not to join the group.

Richard Manuel, another band member, too took his own life in 1986. Despite this, Band was still able to put out three albums in the 1990s. The Sea to the North, Hudson’s debut solo album, was released in September 2001. The following year, Hudson and Sneaky started the band Burrito Deluxe. Rick Lonow, Jeff “Stick” Davis, Carlton Moody, and Pete Kleinow.
